Antioxidants and myocardial contractility: illuminating the "Dark Side" of beta-adrenergic receptor activation?

چکیده
Oxidant byproducts, such as superoxide anion (O2 ) and hydrogen peroxide, are produced as a consequence of normal aerobic metabolism. These molecules, which are highly reactive with other biological molecules, are referred to as reactive oxygen species (ROS). Under normal physiological conditions, ROS production is balanced by an efficient system of antioxidants, molecules that are capable of scavenging ROS and thereby preventing oxidant damage. At the cellular level, naturally occurring enzymatic antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase play an important role in the conversion of ROS to oxygen and water. Several nonenzymatic antioxidants, including the lipid-soluble antioxidants vitamin E and b-carotene and the water-soluble antioxidants vitamin C and glutathione, are also important in scavenging free radicals. Vitamin C in particular protects plasma lipids from peroxidation, scavenges O2, and plays a role in recycling vitamin E.

Different beta 1 and 2 adrenergic receptor agonists may be various biological and physiological effects on fish species. An experiment was designed to study the effects of feeding ractopamine, terbutaline and metaproterenol; as beta1, beta2 and less selective beta 2 adrenergic receptor agonists, respectively; on body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, concentration of biochemical parameters in...

متن کاملAltered cardiac contractility in sleep apnea.
Adrenergic regulation in sleep apnea is a complex process because adrenergic physiology is difficult to summarize with one measure. Furthermore, the role of the adrenergic system in sleep apnea is often confounded with hypertension, making interpretation difficult in hypertensive apneics. Sixty-six people with and without apnea and/or hypertension (all were off antihypertensive medication) part...
متن کاملAlterations by norepinephrine of cardiac sympathetic nerve terminal function and myocardial beta-adrenergic receptor sensitivity in the ferret: normalization by antioxidant vitamins.
BACKGROUND Chronic excessive norepinephrine (NE) causes cardiac sympathetic nerve terminal abnormalities, myocardial beta-adrenergic receptor downregulation, and beta-adrenergic subsensitivity. The present study was carried out to determine whether these changes could be prevented by antioxidants. METHODS AND RESULTS Ferrets were administered either NE (1.33 mg/d) or vehicle by use of subcuta...
متن کاملContractile effects of adenosine A1 and A2A receptors in isolated murine hearts.
The adenosine A1 receptor (A1R) inhibits beta-adrenergic-induced contractile effects (antiadrenergic action), and the adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) both opposes the A1R action and enhances contractility in the heart. This study investigated the A1R and A2AR function in beta-adrenergic-stimulated, isolated wild-type and A2AR knockout murine hearts. Constant flow and pressure perfused preparation...
